Butwal is a large town in southern Nepal, approximately 240 kilometres
west of the Nepalese capital Kathmandu and 22 kilometers from district
headquarter Bhairahawa. Its population in 2001 was 75,384. It is
the headquarter of the Lumbini Zone. |

Butwal was once on the trade route to Tibet. The old part of town
on the west bank of the Tinau River is worth seeing. It is south
of Pokhara and north of Sonauli.
