Boutique hotels in Singapore

We stopped in Singapore a couple of years ago and stayed in a very large hotel near Orchard Road. Do you know of any smaller hotels that we could try on our next trip this November, which are still comfortable, but more individual and more designer in style? Our budget is up to about £120 a night. Barbara Mead, Chepstow

Sunday Times travel expert, Richard Green, responds: Singapore now has some terrific boutique-style hotels, and even at the very best of them, you'll have a welcome wad of change from your budget.

A real stunner is the Scarlet Hotel (00 65 6511 3333) in the heart of Chinatown. Splashed in rich red decor, with gold and black trimmings, it's gone for a designer boudoir effect. Some of the 84 rooms are very small, and some are even windowless, but there are larger and pricier rooms if you prefer. Either way, you won't be able to resist ending each day with a nightcap in the rooftop Breeze bar, with wooden decking, sultry lit foliage, and great views. Doubles from £75.
